Main activities / programme of the Workshop

The workshop consists of three themes/subjects. The participants will study the Finnish language, Finnish society and Finnish culture. As for the Finnish society and culture the connections from Finland to the rest of Europe will be on focus. There will be study visits (e.g. to meet a political party, an employee organization, a Finnish company, Helsinki University,  a third sector organization, and a Finnish comprehensive school - well-known from the PISA tests) and an evening programme including excursions.

The lessons in the Finnish language take place at the institute, the lessons in the Finnish society and culture at the institute and outside the institute in different interesting theme-related locations. The evening programme consists of, for example, excursions to the most remarkable historical and other locations in Helsinki (e.g. Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, www.suomenlinna.fi, and Seurasaari Open-Air Museum, www.seurasaari.fi).

There will be six (6) lessons each day. The workshop always starts at 10:00 am with Finnish lessons. In the afternoon there will be lessons on the Finnish society and culture. During the afternoon lessons there will be study visits. The afternoon ends at 15:45 pm.

There is an evening programme three (3) times during the seven-day-period. Four (4) evenings are left free. The evening programme starts at 18:00 pm.

Expected outputs

The expected learning outcomes for the participants are the basic skills in the Finnish language, good knowledge of various Finland-related issues including Finnish connections with the rest of Europe and hence enhanced general European know-how.

Practical arrangements

All measures will be taken care by Helsingin aikuisopisto (Institute of Adult Education in Helsinki), the course organiser.

The accommodation has been arranged in Helsinki, at Hotel Ava, www.hotelli-ava.fi. The hotel is located only a couple of kilometres from the institute. The institute can be reached easily by tram. The tram tickets will be acquired by the institute. The institute takes care of the accommodation fee on behalf of the participants.

Breakfast will be served at the hotel. Lunch and dinner will be served at the cafeteria of the institute or at some of the small restaurants nearby.

In the evening before the workshop starts a short gathering will be organized at the hotel. After the breakfast in the morning of the first day at school a representative of the institute will take the participants to the institute by tram.

The participants pay for their flight tickets themselves. After having received the receipts of the flight tickets, at the beginning of the first day, the institute pays the sum to each participant. The participants must also pay their taxi trip to the hotel. The institute pays the sum back after having received the receipt. The trip back to the airport will be done by taxi, too, but at the airport a representative of the institute will pay for the taxis.

The programme will consist of six (6) lessons (á 45 minutes) per day. Three (3) of them are lessons in the Finnish language, three (3) of them focus on society and culture. The workshop starts at 10:00 am and ends at 15:45 pm. After the lessons there will be evening programmes three (3) times during the course, four (4) evenings are left free. The measures for the evening programme will be taken care by the organiser.
